Secondary use of data for Switzerland as a research location

Switzerland as a research location not only needs better data. Regulated access to existing data sets and a clear legal basis for their use are also important. This was the conclusion of the panel discussion held by the Swiss Data Alliance on March 29, 2023.

Further findings

  • ACCESS POINT: Access to certain data should be via an independent body that decides on a case-by-case basis - similar to applications for research funding.

  • DATA PROTECTION: Linked data sets, such as those used in research, are very sensitive. Authorities should not have access to them to prevent the emergence of a transparent citizen.

  • DECENTRAL DATA: Research needs access to data - but it should remain stored decentrally. Interoperability is essential.

  • PIONEERING AUSTRIA: It's not just Scandinavia: Statistics Austria opened a new, secure portal with microdata for research in summer 2022.
